This book governs the empty, content-free shape of the OS knowledge vault: the folder layout, frontmatter conventions, note templates, and Home/INDEX pattern a fresh adopter seeds from, carrying none of the contents.

How notes are structured so they stay findable and the indexes stay derivable, covering frontmatter fields, tagging, and folder rules.

The folders

articles/README.md

Marks the reference shelf: long-form notes, external-resource captures, tutorials, and write-ups, filed with descriptive filename prefixes.

canvas/README.md

Marks the home for Obsidian canvas files: visual and spatial notes and diagrams.

content/README.md

Marks the drafts folder for public-facing output, organised flat by approved tag prefix rather than by subfolder.

daily-notes/README.md

Marks the day-by-day capture stream: one note per day with timestamped entries; ideas and suggestions route to ideas/.

Marks where captured ideas and floating suggestions land, each seeded from its matching template.

handoffs/README.md

Marks the session-handoff shelf and fixes the note shape (GitHub State, Completed, In Progress, Next), with an INDEX maintained alongside.

inbox/README.md

Marks the drop zone for unprocessed captures (one item per file, any type, no frontmatter) that a processing step later classifies into the vault.

memory/README.md

Marks the auto-memory store the harness symlinks into: one fact per file with frontmatter, indexed by MEMORY.md, seeded empty.

memory/MEMORY.md

The seeded-empty auto-memory index itself: one line per memory, never memory content.

projects/README.md

Marks the project-notes shelf, split incubating/ and released/, each note pinned to its repo or multi-repo project.

trash/README.md

Marks the local-only, gitignored scratch for soft-deleted artefacts; general-purpose deletion routes to the OS trash instead.

The templates

templates/daily-note.md

The daily note's seed: the daily tag, a dated title, and the first timestamped entry heading.

templates/handoff.md

The handoff note's seed, carrying the four-section shape and guidance on what each section records.

templates/idea.md

The idea capture's seed: What, Why It Matters, and a single concrete Next Step, with trigger terms for resurfacing.

templates/resource.md

The external-resource bookmark's seed: the URL plus a few sentences on what it covers and why it's useful.

templates/suggestion.md

The floating suggestion's seed: just the thought, kept brief.
